According to the information from older inhabitants of the village Mrs. Maria Candeia and Mr. Necco in the 30s there were only 4 houses occupied by 2 families. Quite slowly, the number of the houses grew on reason of marriages with people from the nearer surroundings.
In the 50s, there was already a remarkable number of houses, built out of wood and clay and with palm leaves roofes. There were three fishers and two farmers in the beginnings. Earnings came mainly from the fishery, whose products were brought into the small city Beberibe. Also the barters, beans and rice against fish, was strongly determined at this time. The connection between the village, given name was " Freixeiras" at that time, and Beberibe was a small path through the hedge.
In the 60s Mr.ZeCosta bought up some land of Pedro Colasso Barros and Manuel Germano Nascimento and parceled it. With help of Mr. Leondas, these land was sold to people from Fortaleza. The village began to grow more and more. 1968 the village was connected to the public electricity. Under the mayor of Beberibe, Olavo Facó, the first street, made of sand, was constructed in 1985, shortly after it, it was paved and in 1999, it got a thin asphalt blanket.
Until the year 1989, the people took their custom water from the small brook passing behind the village. 1990 Dr.Luis Marques donated one central water tower, that provides the village population with clean water until today. The water from the brook is still used to clean their laundry and the dishes.
In 1990, it was also Mr. ZeCosta, who stimulated, to give the village the name Praia das Fontes, which then also happened. Reason was and still is the big emergence of the sweet water fountains along the beach.
In 1991, Praia das Fontes got its biggest increase. The hotel and resort Praia das Fontes was constructed and brought the first tourists into this area. A big water park was added to the hotel which calls still today numerous tourists from Fortaleza. In the year 2001, the Hotel was rented to the Group Oasis Atlântico and a new hotel beside the water park was built. These two hotels are also the biggest employer in the district.
In 2008, the group Oasis Atlantico dissolved the contract, in the meantime, the hotel as well as the water park beside are empty and unused. Only the hotel Coliseum (built 2008) is in operation, but has only low booking.
In the late 80s till the 90s the village was famous for the club Panteira. A small pub which offered two times a week music and dance with typical Forro music. People came specifically from Fortaleza to have a good time about itself here. Today, the Panteira lost some of
its attraction but still offers music and dance on Thursday and is mainly frequented by the local population only.
Today, the income of the inhabitants of the village is 65 percent out of tourism activities, 30 percent from the fishery and the rest comes from other services.
Unfortunatly the people do not care very much about clean-ness. Garbage is spread out all over the village.
Unfortunately, the course of the future of this region is set on a badly direction. The crime because of drugs is getting worse and according to my last information even the whole local police were replaced. The political responsibility doesn't promise any improvement either. (2011)
